Planning Ahead for Disasters
The next time a disaster strikes, you may have very limited time, if any, to prepare. The appropriate action to take is planning now for all types of disasters.
Tips for Planning
The following tips will help you prepare for future emergencies or disasters.
- Decide on an out-of-state friend or relative to be a contact point for communications.
- Discuss what to do if you are required to evacuate.
- Discuss what you will do with your pets if you are required to evacuate.
- Inquire about emergency plans for your workplace.
- Involve the whole family in the planning process.
- Learn about emergency plans in place at your child's school or day care facilities.
- Learn several evacuation routes from your home.
Potential Risks
It is also important for you to find out how to prepare for each type of emergency and disaster that could potentially threaten you. In Norwalk, we're at risk for:
- Extreme cold
- Floods
- Hurricanes / Nor'easters
- Power outages
- Severe thunderstorms
- Summer heat waves
- Winter ice storms
In addition to natural disasters, Norwalk residents are at risk for human-caused events like fires, industrial accidents, and transportation accidents on I-95 and Metro North.
