Smoke Detection

The Norwalk Fire Department protects life, property, and environment by providing fire suppression, public education, and training to our residents.

The Fire Department strongly recommends that all structures be protected with smoke detection. This allows for safer and quicker egress from a structure. It also helps by notifying the Fire Department of the emergency.

Building Codes

Current building codes also assist with occupant safety. The engine and ladder companies in your neighborhood participate in building familiarization and inspection processes to find safety concerns and hazards that firefighters may encounter.

Process

If a fire occurs, the Fire Department provides an aggressive interior attack using the first due engine, ladder, and rescue. This likely means the fire will be held in the area where it started.

Department staff members will search the structure and release heated smoke and gases if needed. Modern, well-designed apparatus and equipment make the firefighters' job more efficient.

Hydrant System

The city is, for the most part, protected by a hydrant system. The second due engine company can establish a water supply from a hydrant in minutes. Always be aware of where you park your car - don't block hydrants!
