Responsibilities

The Norwalk Historical Commission oversees four city cemeteries (Brookside, Kellogg, Mill Hill, and Pine Island), various collections and archives of the Norwalk Museum, and nine historic properties owned by the City of Norwalk including:

• Carriage House (occupied by the Center for Contemporary Printmaking)
• Gardener's Cottage (occupied by the Center for Contemporary Printmaking)
• Gate Lodge (occupied by Tourism)
• Governor Fitch Law Office (occupied by the Norwalk Historical Society - yellow clapboard building)
• Lockwood Mathews Mansion (occupied by the Lockwood Mathews Mansion Museum)
• Mill Hill Town House (occupied by the Norwalk Historical Society - brick building)
• Old Jail or Lock-up (undergoing restoration)
• School house (occupied by the Norwalk Historical Society - red clapboard building)
• Smith Street Barn (used as a workshop for the Historical Commission and for storage)

Members & Terms

Historical Commission members are appointed for five-year terms on a revolving basis by the Mayor and are approved by the Common Council of Norwalk. The commission consists of 10 commissioners, one of which is a member of the Common Council.
